Gurgaon: Five days after the lesbian couple went into hiding after their hearing in the Gurgaon court, they resurfaced in the city on Saturday. The court of an additional sessions judge sent them to a protection home to ward off any trouble. And they now have a gunman for their security.
Gurgaon police commissioner S S Deswal confirmed that the couple — Beena and Savita have been provided with a gunman too in accordance with the court order. “The couple will stay in the protection home for 15 days. Now they are happy since they have no fear of being harassed by anyone, including their family members,” said Vandana Aggarwal and Durgesh Bokan, the couple’s legal counsel.
Vandana said the two couple since the two have no source of livelihood, they will approach the state government to provide them with some employment, so that they can live independently. “Both are women and have no permanent source of income to meet their expenses,” she said.
The court will have the next hearing on August 16, the day their parents and other relatives will appear before it. The couple from Khekeda village in Baghpat said they were hiding from their relatives since everyone was against their relationship. They came to Gurgaon when a relative, Jaiveer, provided them protection in his village.
They had sought police protection from a city court on Monday claiming they had received threats from friends and relatives in their village after they got married.
Savita Prajapati, a 25-yearold student of Chaudhary Charan Singh University and her 22-year-old husband Beena Dhama got married by signing an agreement before a public notary on July 22 in Gurgaon. Locals said Beena, who had been brought up like a boy, drove a Pulsar(180cc bike) and used to drop Savita at a school where she was working as a teacher
