THE endearing Shahid Kapoor has decided to end his silence and talk about his break-up with the ravishing Kareena Kapoor. Disturbed by the onslaught of pictures in the media of her and the new man in her life, actor Saif Ali Khan, Shahid admitted to BT: “It will be dishonest to say that this doesn’t affect me. I am human, it hurts to see and read this all the time. I guess I have no choice but to live and deal with it.” Their movie together is ready for release and he says that he is hoping the audience accepts them as an onscreen couple. About the failed relationship, he says, “I hold nothing against anybody, if I do, it will pull me down. I’ll cherish the good memories of that relationship and move on. That’s what I’m doing — looking at the positive side and trying to be happy,” he said sadly.
And is one of the positive sides the fact that the lover boy is single all over again? Shahid smiled coyly, “I am feeling a certain sense of independence all over again. Today, I have time to myself and can do things which maybe I always wanted to do but never could. From where I am at this point in life, things are looking up. The best part is the overwhelming affection, concern and support that people are showing. I feel special.” What went wrong between Kareena and him? Was he a possessive lover? “Love in itself is enough. It brings security. One doesn’t need to be possessive. I have never been like that,” he said, adding, “But it is below Bebo’s dignity and mine to talk about all this now. I wish her all the happiness in the world. I have great respect for her. She’s a wonderful girl.” And what about himself ? “Oh, I’m very optimistic and still believe in love. You don’t plan falling in love but, yes, I will fall in love again,” he said crinkling his eyes and beaming.
IN their new film, Kareena and Shahid play characters who are poles apart. They meet and fall in love while travelling to Bhatinda. However, in real life, their journey has not had a happy ending. They joined a long list of couples in tinsel town who didn’t make it to the happilyever-after fairy tale ending.
When a famous onscreen jodi breaks up, where does public sympathy lie? According to singer Avril Quadros, “It takes more than a man or a woman to break up a relationship of four years. The public sympathy often goes with the person who has been dumped, but my sympathy is with noone. We don’t know the whole story, so it is wrong to be judgmental.”
Public sympathy at times also affects the career graph of either star. Ben Affleck recently went on record saying that his relationship with JLo was responsible for his career slipping. “In India, break-ups of the family are not acceptable,” says Preetha Dasgupta, a sociologist. “Stars here have a halo over their heads. The public condemns a relationship wherein a partner leaves the other for a third person, and this might affect their careers,” she adds.
The public viewpoint also has shades of gender bias. The lady often gets more sympathy as women are perceived to be more committed and stable than men in a relationship. Dr Vikram Prabhu, psychiatrist, thinks it’s rare that a woman receives flak for a failed relationship. “Stars become role models and the public has a starry-eyed image of them. They want happily-ever-after in real life too. Like Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan,” he says.
However, according to deejay Sasha Sambi, the public does not have time for break-ups and make-ups. “They read about it and leave it at that,” he says. “I
don’t think that it affects them on any level.”
Fingers are also being pointed at Saif, the third angle in the love story, who has been linked with Bipasha Basu before. So does he come across as the villain of the story? No, the speculation will not affect Saif in any way, feels Avril. “He is good-looking, his career is going well and he is getting all the hot girls. The luckiest person in all this is Saif,” she says. According to designer Raj Shroff, Saif is an intense actor who knows how to play his cards well. “After all, it’s the hero who gets the heroine in the end and not the villain,” he quips.
