Bangalore: Members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike barged into the Taj West End hotel on Tuesday evening and ransacked the premises demanding jobs for Kannadigas in the newly launched taxi service to the Bengaluru International Airport. They smashed glasses and damaged valuables inside the hotel.
The launch of MERU taxi service to the airport was organised at the hotel in the evening. As the programme got over, 15 activists barged inside and ransacked the premises.
Joe Mathews, regional manager of V-Link, the taxi service provider, said: “The state government has allowed us to attach 500 taxis to BIAL and to run in the city. The recruitment process of drivers is already over. We had conducted an examination and preference was given to those speaking fluent English and Kannada,’’ he said.
New taxi service to BIA
The BIAL has signed up with the company, which will offer a metered radio taxi service by this monthend. MERU will have a fleet of 500 cabs and 400 of them will be plying between the airport and city. These cabs are fitted with electronic meters and printers and will use GPS technology to enable realtime taxi location and dispatch. The fare is Rs 15/ km as prescribed by the state government.
